Best starter rod/reel/etc for SoCal freshwater lakes? One for myself and girlfriend. Combined budget 0.

We’re both total novices, but have fished plenty of times on saltwater charters with family friends. We live in Southern California. There are a few lake options near us, like Big Bear Lake, or Lake Isabella. The fish honestly vary a lot, and we’re not super concerned with what kind, since we’ll take whatever we can get.

We have a trip planned to Big Bear Lake next weekend (in 5 days) and really wanted to spend the time fishing on our own. Ideally, we’d love to make a rush order tonight and get everything before next Friday, which would give me time to learn and assemble everything.

Here are some details:

  • Primarily all we’ll need is freshwater
  • I’m 5’11 and 185 lbs. She’s 5’2 and 115 lbs.
  • As mentioned, multi-purpose enough for a variety of random fish, since we can’t be picky.
  • Total budget is around $100 each.
  • If it’s available on Amazon Prime – AMAZING.

I honestly know nothing about the total amount of stuff we have to buy and put together, so I’m looking for some rather copy-paste-search-buy-assemble suggestions.

The only thing to keep in mind is, we hate going super ghetto and “outgrowing” our purchase fast (which is what happened with our bicycles) so we could bump the budget if it means getting more longevity out of the whole system.

Thanks for any help..
